Info : Car Tyres Maintenance

Maintaining your car tyres will not only cause it to last longer on the road but also will reduce your fuel consumptions. Below are some guides that might help …

Before we start, let’s find out how to read your tyre details.

1. Inflation Pressure

You should check your tyres inflation pressure regularly. Improper inflation will cause your tyres’ thread to wear out very fast (at least 20% faster). Where can you check it? Just go to any petrol station will do.

There are basically 2 types of reading that can normally be found when you go for your tyre inflation pressure checking. The meter reading will either show kPa or PSI. (10 kPa = 1.45psi)

How do you know what’s the correct pressure your tyre should have? Well, you can check this by referring to your Tyre Placard, which can normally be found somewhere at the driver’s seat.

2. Rotating Tyres

As the rear tyres will need more grip, they tend to wear out faster than the front tyres. In order to balance up the life-span of your tyres, it is suggested that you should change your rear tyres to the front every 8,000km.

There are a few benefits by practicing this …

a. increase the tyres life-span (thread life)
b. even out the front-rear wear patterns
c. reduce vibration (due to imbalance thread patterns)
d. reduce noise (as vibration is reduced)

If you can’t afford to change all 4 tyres at once, you can actually change 2 tyres first but make sure that it will be mounted onto the rear and not to the front. (It’s because the front will have sufficient weight from the engine to ensure the tyre have good grip on the road. The rear don’t have much counter-weight and therefore need better grip)

New tyres at the rear will not only have better grip but can drain out water more effectively on wet roads. This will certainly reduce or avoid hydroplanning.

3. Wheel Alignment and Balancing

This is to ensure that the tyres are properly aligned and balanced so that all 4 tyres will hold vehicle properly. If the tyres are not aligned, you will notice that the thread on your tyres will wear out partially and you won’t want that to happen.

I would personally suggest that you do this every 4 months or 12,000km. This will really help in enhancing your tyres performance and increase its life-span.

If you are driving 90km/h and your steering shakes, you should go and do balancing at once. It will not only be dangerous but will also harm your absorbers, wheel bearings and engine mounting.

4. Tyre Life Span

Everything has its own life-span. By following the above-mentioned points will only increase it but somehow, sooner or later it will wear out as well.

The life span of a tyre will depends on its quality/grade, type of material, maintenance and of course the condition it is used on. A normal and well-maintained tyre can last about 2 to 3 years. However, bear in mind, it is also depends on your usage as well.

Tyres are the only things that hold your vehicle on the road. It’s the only grip. Therefore, please ensure you get good quality tyres and perform your maintenance as regular as possible.

Feel free to drop some comments on how else you maintain your car tyres. Maybe you can share the rates and suggest some advise which brand of tyre to use.

  3. Really a nice post.

Always ensure that the tyres of the car have prescribed air pressure. Having lower air pressure in the tyres affects driving stability. Checking wheel alignment of the vehicle on a regular basis. This will prolongs the life of the tyres and enhances the safety of the car.

Very valuable information about car tyres maintenance and i got more ideas after reading this post. Thanks…

Wow….you have really discussed a very good topic here. Tyres are important part of a vehicle and maintaining it is not an easy task. Well-maintained tyre will provide a wonderful driving experience in terms of performance, grip, tyre noise and wear. Car tyre efficiency is a great measure of creating performance. So, it is important to check your car tyres regularly, for wear, cracking, bulging, pressure or objects caught in the tread.
